Registering with the Municipality to get a BSN

If you plan on living in the Netherlands for longer than 4 months, you need to register for a BSN number at the local municipality where you will be living. Many municipalities are busy, with appointments filling quickly. Therefore, check booking availability in advance, ideally immediately after confirming your travel and accommodation. Book your appointment for the first few days after arrival. You must attend your appointment in person within 5 days of arriving in the Netherlands.

  • Identify your municipality: Search “gemeente” and the city or town you will be staying in.
