Furnishing Your New Home

Expats usually choose between two main approaches when setting up their new place.

The Blank Canvas Arrival

Some expats choose to arrive at an empty home and furnish it themselves. They might stay in temporary accommodation while setting things up, or simply “rough it” in their new home while they slowly gather furniture and essentials.

“Roughing it” often means:

  • Sleeping on an inflatable mattress
  • Eating meals while sitting on the floor
  • Living without home Wi-Fi for the first few weeks

In most cases, people manage to secure the essential furniture within the first week or two. A new fiber internet connection, however, often takes two to three weeks to install.

The reality of “roughing it.”

In you choose to “rough it”, be prepared for a fair amount of discomfort!

Moving to a new country already demands a lot from you. You are adapting to a new language, culture, and way of life, all while navigating paperwork, housing, and everyday logistics. These transitions can be emotionally and physically exhausting.

When you add poor sleep, limited comforts, and an empty home into the mix, the experience can quickly become overwhelming.

We experienced this ourselves. It was so tough that it eventually inspired us to start Easy Arrival! So other newcomers wouldn’t have to go through the same struggle.

The reality of staying in temporary accomodation while setting up your home

When I started Easy Arrival, I carefully compared the different strategies people use to furnish their homes after relocating.

One option many newcomers consider is staying in temporary accommodation while slowly furnishing their permanent home. On the surface, it sounds convenient. In reality, it is often one of the least efficient strategies.

First, it is usually the most expensive option. You are effectively paying for two homes at the same time: temporary housing and your long-term rental.

Second, it creates a surprising amount of logistical hassle.

Instead of focusing on settling into your new life, you often find yourself constantly moving back and forth between locations to:

  • Wait for furniture deliveries
  • Accept appliance installations
  • Handle internet setup appointments
  • Manage other home services

At the same time, you are trying to figure out how to buy everything you need in a completely new system: unfamiliar stores, different delivery rules, new payment methods, and a language that may not be your own.

The Fully Prepared Arrival

Other expats take a different approach, the “arrive and actually live” option.

Instead of landing in an empty apartment, they arrange to have their furniture and essential household items ready before they arrive.

The idea is simple:

  • Walk in.
  • Unpack your suitcase.
  • And immediately be able to cook, eat, sleep, and relax.

Arriving to a prepared home helps soften the shock of relocation. Having familiar comforts from day one restores a sense of normal life much faster and creates stability for you and your family during the transition.

That’s exactly why we created the Ready-Home Service.

It ensures that when you open the door to your new home, everything you need to cook, eat, relax, and sleep is already waiting for you.

So instead of spending your first days scrambling for basics, you can focus on what really matters: settling in and starting your new life.
